Perhaps one of the most distinguishing features of Chicago City Hall is its renowned spectacular rooftop garden. In a single block between LaSalle, Randolph, Clark, and Washington streets, Chicago City hall is an 11-story office building. The idea for the rooftop garden came about the late 1990s, and was planted in 2000, as a part of the City's Urban Heat Island Initiative. This lovely garden helps keep the air quality pure and lower the temperature, which can climb higher than it would naturally in the area, due to the warming effect of concrete, pavement, and other signs of city life. Instead of a typical black tar roof, which attracts heat, the rooftop garden keeps the building cool, reducing the need for ai conditioning. The garden also conserves energy and helps with storm runoff. It does so by absorbing much of the rainwater from a storm, which then re-integrates more naturally into the environment than it would as runoff in streets ans storm drains.

City Hall itself is the home of the official state government of Illinois. It features four relief panels sculpted by artist John Flanagan, depicting different concerns of the state's government. Visitors will notice signs of the history of Chicago's city halls, from 1837 to the present day. A major renovation project was undertaken in 1967, to relocate major government departments, which can still be found there today.
