The Chicago Public Library, one of the largest public library systems of its kind in the United States, boasts an extraordinary collection of more than 10,000,000 volumes. The public library system got is start with the “English Book Drive,” the brainchild of Londoner A.H. Burgess, after the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. His proposal called for England to donate a lending library to the burned city, and, after many requests, a 8,000-volume library was collected. After public support roused the city government to establish a tax-supported library, the first Chicago Public Library was established in an old water tank at LaSalle and Adams Streets.

Currently, the main library branch is the Harold Washington Library Center, which opened in 1991, and was named after the late mayor. It is easily accessible by the Brown, Purple, Pink, and Orange line trains at the “Library” stop, and from the Blue line at the “LaSalle” and “Jackson” stops, and from the Red line at the “Jackson” stop as well.
