The Chicago Water Tower, located near the Loyola University's Downtown campus at 806 North Michigan Avenue, is a famous beloved Chicago landmark. The second-oldest water tower in the United States, the Chicago Water Tower was built in 1869 by architect William W. Boyington out of Lemont limestone. It became very well known after the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, because it was one of the few buildings of the area to survive the blaze. The 154-foot tall tower held a standpipe for water, which could alternatively be used for firefighting and to control local water surges.

Named an American Water Landmark in 1969, the tower has been given a featured location, and inspired many local structures and restaurants by its remarkable castle-like form.
