San Francisco’s Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA) is the oldest and largest organization dedicated to the study and documentation of Chinese American history. Established in 1963, its collection includes thousands of documents and artifacts related to the Chinese American experience.

Its permanent exhibits depict the history of Chinese immigration to America, beginning in the 1600s. Its bilingual explanations document the contributions the Chinese have made in America in the development of the fishing, railroad, mining and agriculture industries in the West. CHSA also hosts several changing exhibitions throughout the year. Past examples include Remembering 1882: Fighting for Civil Rights in the Shadow of the Chinese Exclusion Act and To Enjoy ad Defend Our American Citizenship. Scholars looking to gain a more in-depth experience at CHSA are also welcomed to explore its learning center and research materials.

The Chinese Historical Society of America is open Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. year round. Admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for students and senior citizens and $1.00 for children.
