The Chora Museum, or Kariye Museem in Turkish, carries a rich history. The site sat for centuries as a church, bearing various faiths throughout the years. Just outside the city walls of Constantinople, he Chora originally stood as a Christian church in the 5th century. The name Chora even means "in the country" in Greek.

However, earthquakes and abandonment would destroy much of the original structure. It was not until the city walls were expanded that people started to notice the Chora. The site would become a mosque after the Conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans, and then turn over to the Byzantines in the 14th century.

It was during this period that the Chora museum's most acclaimed artifacts can be seen. Most of the mosaics and frescoes came from this period at the Chora, holding the title of the best mosaics in all of Istanbul.

In 1958, the Chora became a museum to share its mosaics with travelers from all around the world. Visitors today can stop by from 9AM until 7PM during summer months. Admission does cost 15 TL.

While admiring the structure of the Chora, minds should be aware they are observing a present structure from the 11th century.
