Built by a parish organized on the eve of the American Civil War in 1859, Christ Episcopal Church started as a Gothic-style chapel completed in Springfield, Missouri in 1866. In the wake of damage resulting from a lightening strike, and a parish growing exponentially in size, construction began on a new church in a new location. The Carpenter Gothic wood nave was completed in 1870 and the High Gothic Revival stone chancel and parish hall in 1928.

As a result of the time span of the construction of Christ Episcopal Church, it is a rare example of both 19th and 20th century Gothic Revival architecture in a single building. The church is also the oldest remaining religious building in Springfield, and a Missouri Historic Landmark. Services are held at Christ Episcopal Church on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with special events also held periodically.
