Chucalissa Archaeological Museum

Hotels near Chucalissa Archaeological Museum, Memphis (Tennessee), United States .

The C.H. Nass Chucalissa Museum is a prehistoric American Indian archaeological site that dates all the way back to the 15th century. Listed as a U.S. National Historic Landmark, the site has been occupied and abandoned by several groups throughout history. It is a gateway to the understanding and interpretation of Native American history, its mount complex, nature trail and arboretum just a few of the many insightful amenities it has to offer.

The Chucalissa Museum itself was founded in 1956 shortly after the rediscovery of a Mississippi mound complex. Though it was first developed mainly as a training center for archaeologists, it has grown into an important institution concentrated on educating the general public as well. All museum exhibitions, tours, events and educational programs have been created in hopes of spreading knowledge among visitors.

This University of Memphis operated museum and site is open year round. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (note that the museum is closed on Sundays from December to March). Admission fees are $5.00 and under (October 2009).

The Chucalissa Archaeological Museum is located near the Chickasaw Bluffs and the T.O. Fuller State Park, outdoor areas that museum visitors will definitely want to check out before or after their museum stops.
