Church of Saint Mary of the Castle

The Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption is also called the Cathedral of Evora. Located in Evora, Portugal and built between 1184 and 1204, this Romanesque and Gothic-style cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Evora and is located on the highest point in the city.

Two towers stand beside the church's main door, making it resemble a castle or a fortress. It is said that the flags of Vasco da Gama ships’ were blessed here, in 1497, before departing to the sea. In 1988, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.

The cathedral's interior consists of a nave with two aisles. Also inside is the Gothic cloister, a cathedral museum and a treasury housing many artistic works. One of the most famous is a 13th-century carved ivory triptych of the Madonna and Child, which opens to reveal a collection of scenes from Mary's life. Another treasure here is a reliquary studded with 1,426 precious stones, including sapphires, rubies, diamonds, and emeralds . Some of the altars are covered by pure gold that was taken from South America during colonization.

The cathedral/museum is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 6 p.m.(The museum is closed on Mondays). It costs about $1.50 USD to enter.
