Home to the world-famous Kentucky Derby (perhaps the most important event in horse racing globally), the Churchill Downs are located in Louisville, Kentucky, in the southwestern part of the city where 3rd Street and Longfield Avenue meet. The Churchill Downs are owned and operated by Churchill Downs Incorporated, and opened for the first racing derby in 1875.

As of 2009, the Churchill Downs rank fifth on the Horseplayers Association of North America's list of 65 thoroughbred racetracks across the nation. Between 2001 and 2005, the Churchill Downs underwent a $121 million renovation project, which saw major changes to the club house and the addition of many luxury suites. Located on site, visitors will also find the curious Kentucky Derby Museum, dedicated to the history of this acclaimed racing event and the local premises. Tours of the Churchill Downs have been suspended as of August 2009 due to flash flooding, however visit the official website http://www.churchilldowns.com/ to find out when tours will be restarted.
