The Cincinnati Observatory Center, located on top of Mt. Lookout, in Cincinnati, Ohio, comprises two observatory buildings with refracting telescopes. The Observatory was originally founded by Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel on November 9, 1843; President John Quincy laid the first cornerstone at the original building site on Mt. Ida. It remains the nation’s first professional observatory and it houses the oldest professional telescope, a Merz and Mahler from Germany, still in public use. Since its founding, the observatory has been open to the public with Astronomy nights and educational activities. Today, the observatory offers year round night time viewings.
