The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens has the honor of being the second oldest zoo in the United States. It was founded in 1873 and officially opened in 1875. At first, the zoo only had 8 monkeys, two grizzly bears, three deer, six raccoons, two elk, a hyena, a tiger, an alligator, an elephant and a collection of birds; since then its selection has expanded exponentially. In 1987, the zoo was awarded the distinction of being a National Historic Landmark. Tickets start at $13 for adults and $9 for children and seniors. Packages including rides and the 4D theater are available as well starting at $24 for adults and $20 for children and seniors. There are discounted group rates as well. Opening hours depend on the season.
