Recife's rich history includes a rather tumultuous period of colonial rule, and one of the most memorable buildings in town played a major role in most of the fighting between the locals and the Dutch.

Built on Antonio Vaz Island in the early 1600s, Cinco Pontas Fort was constructed by a Dutch engineer as a potential stronghold for the Dutch to defend themselves while attempting to colonize the area. Located on the southern half of the island, the fort got its name because it appeared to have five different points, or tips.

During the period of colonial rule, the Brazilians actually managed to inflict significant damage on the original incarnation of the fort, but it was since been restored for historical purposes and currently serves as a popular historical spot for Brazilians and foreigners alike with an interest in history. Even those without an interest in history enjoy visiting for the views, which are unparalleled in a city where almost everything close enough has a truly beautiful view to the sea.

Cinco Pontas Fort is open daily for visitors, and includes the city museum, with many interesting paintings and objects that give further insight into the area's history. Many of the popular hotels located in the city's historic centre are just a short distance, including Hotel Caruaru, Hotel Praia Dourada, and Recife Plaza Hotel.
