Citizens Park and Stadtwald (Bürgerpark und der Stadtwald) are the most famous and largest contiguous park in the city of Bremen. Over 200 hectares of green space stretching near the main train station built in the second half of the nineteenth Century as a popular classical garden with lawns, woods, lakes and coffee houses. With such diverse attractions such as animal enclosures, boat rentals, a runway and mini-golf and football courts, the park offers visitors many recreational opportunities. It is located about one kilometer northeast of Bremen's old town and unlike other Bremen parks (Central Park) is not dissected by any roads.
The history of Bremen’s Burgerpark begins with the formation of the „Comite fur die Bewaldung der Burgerweide” (Committee for the deforestation of Burgerweide) 143 years ago. Parallel to the written history, there is the popular legend of „Countess Emma and the Cripple”, which describes how the plot of land called Burgerweide came into the possession of Bremen’s citizens.
The four most interesting buildings are Parkhaus, Kaffeehaus am Emmasee, the Meierei restaurant and Waldschlosschen. The coffeehouse, Meierei and Waldbuhne, formerly Waldschlosschen, are, as at the time of their original design, restaurants and cafes serving in particular Burgerpark visitors.
In what park experience is concerned, Burgenpark has many lawns to relax and play, children playgrounds, an animal park and hosts many events such as concerts, theatre representations, art exhibitions or painting workshops.
