Cittadella is a medieval walled city in the province of Padua in northern Italy that was founded in the thirteenth century as a military outpost of Padua.
The surrounding wall is 1461 meters and has been restored. There are four gates which connect the points of the compass. The English poet Robert Browning once said of Citadel: "For these walls, I would give all of London."

Cittadella was built in 1220 at the time of the wars between the communes.
It was built in consecutive stages in a polygonal shape on orthogonal axes through the construction of 32 large and small towers with the formation of a protective moat and with four drawbridges next to the four entrance gates.
Its walls which are 14 to 16 meters tall were built with the box masonry technique: two parallel walls filled with a sturdy core of stones and hot slaked lime totaling a thickness of about 2.10 meters.
The walls today are still intact except for a part that was destroyed in the 16th century during the Cambrai war. This is one of the many tourist sites in Cittadella.
