City Market

Hotels near City Market, Savannah (Georgia), United States .

The City Market in Savannah, Georgia, can trace its roots all the way back to the year 1755, when local merchants, fishermen, and farmers brought their goods into the town to be sold. The market became the bustling commercial heart of the town. After two original buildings burned down, the more modern market building was constructed in 1872. Known for its 50-foot roof, big circular windows, and arches done in the Romanesque style, the building remained a formidable commercial bastion in the mind of Savannah residents until its unfortunate demise in the modern era, to be replaced by a more modern establishment in 1954. A farewell ball could not assuage the feelings of some preservationists, who went on to form the Historic Savannah Foundation, designed to protect other historic structures from a similar fate.

Today, visitors can find numerous dining, shopping, and entertainment options on the property, including Cafe at City Market, A.T. Hun-International Gallery, and Old Town Trolley.

For lodging, consider the Planters Inn on Reynolds Square.
