In the town of Hildesheim in Lower Saxony, Germany, the City Museum Knochenhauer Amtshaus might make all buildings in the town feel inferior inside and out.

The Museum, or Butchers' Guild Hall as it is referred, was known at one point or another to be the finest and most beautiful specimen of a half-timbered building in the world. In 1945 it was destroyed, but later rebuilt in 1987 in keeping with tradition.

The façade is beautifully decorated with colorful paintings, carvings, and even a few German proverbs. The four storey building houses some of Hildesheim's most famous relics, with the goal of portraying unique history of daily life in Hildeheim from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

The must-sees at the museum include a bathroom dating back to the late Middle Ages and a full silverware set belonging to the prince bishop of Hildesheim. The set remains the only complete silverware collection from the 18th century.

The City Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10AM to 6PM. Admission prices are mere pocket change, at just 2,50 Euro a person. After exploring the museum visitors can continue on the marvel at the town's Cathedral, declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
