The City Wall of Xi’an is one of the best preserved Chinese city walls in the country. It is located in Xi’an, China and was established in 582 of Sui Dynasty. Over the years, the City Wall has been renovated three times in 1568, in 1781, and in 1983. Currently, the City Wall of Xi’an includes a deep moat, a hanging bridge, a gate tower, watchtowers, turrets, crenels and more.

The City Wall of Xi’an stands 12 meters tall, 12-14 meters wide at the top and 15-18 meters thick at the bottoms. The City Wall was built from earth, rammed layer upon layer during the early times. The base was made of earth, quick lime and glutinous rice extract making the wall firm and strong. Later on, the wall was completely enclosed with bricks. The wall has four complicated gate structures.

Tourists can arrive at the City Wall of Xi’an by bus starting from the Xi’an Railway Station or take the airport bus when starting from the Xi’an Xianyang Airport. Tourists have to pay an admission fee of CNY 40. The City Wall is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. during spring and summer and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the fall and winter. Touring the City Wall usually takes three hours. Aside from walking within the city walls, it is recommended that tourists try a bike ride for a new and enjoyable experience.
