Used for public events and a popular lunch spot for several office workers, The Civic Square of Wellington, New Zealand is conveniently located at the centre of the city. It is a marking point for the boundary of the financial district to the north and the entertainment district to the south. It is behind the Wellington Town Hall in Wakefield Street.

The civic square is surrounded by different council buildings such as the Town Hall, the Michael fowler Centre, The Central Library, The City-to-Sea Bridge and the City Gallery. The square was dated back in 1944 but the plan for the Civic Square was not put into action until 1987 when the Wellington City Council developed the area.

The project was started and finished by Fletcher Development and Construction Ltd. in 1992. The project involved constructing a brand new library, converting the existing one to a City Gallery instead of a library, earthquake-proofing the building, car parking space constructions and renovations of existing city council buildings.

The square has yellow bricks and has a seating capacity of 10,000 people which includes the City-to-Sea Bridge that connects the Civic Square to Wellington’s waterfront. The square has a stage for hire, a PA system for outdoor gatherings and Events Caravans.

Several hotels in the nearby area are the Nomads Hotel, Duston Hotel Wellington, Village Accommodation Wellington, Central City Apartment Hotel and the Trinity Hotel Wellington.
