Known as the Tiruchirapalli Airport, The Civil Airport serves the areas of Tiruchirapalli and nearby districts of the state of Tamil Nadu. It is five kilometers away from the city centre and is found along the NH 210 Tiruchirapalli-Rameswaram Highway. It is the second largest airport in the region that serves international destinations.

It was built as a base by the British Air Force during the Second World War. Although, it had been originally intended to be a passenger airport, it was not until the 1980’s that passenger traffic started to increase in the airport. The New Integrated Terminal with its modern facilities has just been recently inaugurated as well. Currently, the Civil Airport has aerobridges, baggage conveyor systems, escalators, flight information displays, check-in counters and many more amenities to serve its increasing traffic of passengers.

Airlines serving the airport include Air India Express, Indian Airlines, Kingfisher Airlines and Paramount Airways for domestic flights. International flights are provided by Air Asia, Air India Express, Indian airlines, Mihin Lanka and Sri Lankan Airlines.

The airport serves the Tiruchirappali city, which is the fourth largest city of Tamil Nadu. The city has a lot of sights and sounds which help it become one of the tourist destinations in the country. This keeps the airport one of the busiest in India.

Some of popular attractions include The Planetarium and Science Centre, Rock Fort, Sri Rangam, Iyappan Temple, Rettai Malai Sami Kovil, Grand Anaicut Picnic Park, Viralimalai, Sittanavasal among others.
