The Civil Rights Memorial, located in historic Montgomery, Alabama, is a structure which was dedicated in 1989 to the 40 people who died for their beliefs in equality and independence for racial minorities. Those honored died between the years of 1954 and 1968, when the conflict came to a head with the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Designed by artist Maya Lin, who also has sculptures at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. and on the campus of Yale University, the monument takes its inspiration from a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr., which refers to the might of water. Water flows over a cone-like structure containing the names of those who died. A guard watches over the monument today to ward off vandals.
