Clarke Quay is the only quay in Singapore with a strong historical heritage. It is situated at the very mouth of the Singapore River. The name “Clarke Quay” was named in honor of Sir Andrew Clarke. He was the second governor and the Governor of the Straights Settlements between 1873 and 1875. He was also the man who pushed Singapore to become the main sea port for Sungei Ujong, Selangor and Perak states.

Clarke Quay is a main area along the river. In recent years, business activities grew and eventually developed a pedestrian mall to accommodate commercial and personal needs of families, tourists and visitors. In 1896, Clarke Street was created right next to Clarke Quay. Similar to the Quay, the Street was also converted into a pedestrian area. Its name refers to gi hok kong si au. It means “behind the new house or Gi Hok Kongsi which is near the Carpenter Street.

Along Clarke Quay is the Festival Village which was one of the biggest conservation projects of the country. It was intended to preserve Singapore River and develop hundreds of business activities. The area is managed by CapitaLand and was formally opened on December 10, 1993.
