A historical complex of buildings in Prague, Czech Republic, the Clementium (or Klementium) is currently being used as the National Library of the Czech Republic.
A chapel on the same spot was dedicated to St. Clement in the 11th century. Later during the medieval period, a Dominican monastery was there, and became a Jesuit college in 1556. The library of this college was transferred to the Klementium in 1622. In 1773, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria established the Klementium as an observatory, library, and university. From 1782, the Klementium was a legal deposit library.
The Czecho-Slovak state took over the Klementium in 1918 and it has been the government's National Library since 1990.
The Klementium is the second largest complex of buildings in Prague, the Prague Castle being the first. It is a great example of Baroque architecture. It was given UNESCO's Jikji prize (Memory of the World) in 2005.
