Founded in 1930, the Cleveland Botanical Garden was originally titled the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland. The center functioned as a horticultural library, leading beautification efforts in the city and also offering classes for local gardeners. In 1966 it was moved to the former site of the Cleveland Zoo, where it remains today. The name was officially changed to the Cleveland Botanical Garden in 1994 by the Board of Trustees. A new, modern building was erected in 2003 to meet the growing needs of the society. Designed by the Cambridge firm Graham Gund Architects, today's elegant and simple structure provides a subtle and fitting compliment to the beautiful surrounding foliage. One of the main attractions The Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse, a $50 million conservatory home for plant and animal life from Costa Rica and Madagascar.
