Cleveland Museum of Natural History

Hotels near Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland (Ohio), United States .

One of the most popular museums for families with younger children to visit while in Cleveland is The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Located a few miles east of the bustling downtown over in University Circle, the museum is conveniently close to a number of the other arts museums and cultural attractions in the city.

The museum has a large collection of exciting specimens, and has a number of permanent exhibits that are popular with children and adults alike. Some of the most exciting artifacts at the museum include a T-rex skeleton, a number of mammoth and mastodon skeletons, and the only existing skeleton of one small species of tyrannosaur. The museum's most famous piece, however, might be a cast of what its original curator found while on a dig: Lucy, the earliest hominid skeleton ever found, and perhaps the beginning of human life as we know it.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is well-known for a single collection, known as The Hamman-Todd Collection, which brings together more than 3,000 human skeletons and 900 primate skeletons, to show connections between the species and understand how both types of bodies work. The collection, which began in the 1890s, is still being added to.

In addition to the permanent collection, a number of special exhibits are commonplace at the museum, including ones on far-flung geographic regions like The Galapagos Islands, as well as on the natural history of the state of Ohio. Special classes and lectures also occur frequently at the museum, and the research facilities are a hot spot for different programs from various college campuses around town.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is open from ten in the morning until five in the afternoon Monday through Saturday, with extended hours on Wednesday, when the museum closes at ten at night. On Sunday, the museum is only open from noon until five.

A number of hotels are just a short walk away from The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, including The Glidden Guest House, The InterContinental Suites Hotel Cleveland, and The Omni International Hotel.
