Clifton is now the name of both of the thirty-five council wards within the City of Bristol, England and also of a large suburb in the city that lies mostly within the ward. The Clifton ward also includes the areas of Clifton wood and hot wells areas. It is a beautiful and widely known area.
Notable places in the Clifton ward also include the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Clifton Cathedral, Clifton College, The Clifton Club, and Goldney Hall.
Clifton is considered one of the oldest and most wealthy areas in the city with much of it being built with the profits from tobacco and the slave trades. Located to the west of Bristol's city centre it was at one time a separate settlement but became part of Bristol by continuous development during the Georgian era and was formally incorporated into the city in the 1830s. Beautiful houses that required many servants were also built in the area and although some were detached or semi-detached properties the majority of the buildings were built as terrace many with three or more floors. One famous terrace is the Majestic Royal York Crescent which was visible from the Avon Gorge below and looking across to the Bristol docks. Berkeley Square which was built around 1790 is a good example of Georgian architecture. The ABC Cinema on White ladies Road has now been converted into office spaces and a gymnasium. Clifton Lido was built in 1850 but was closed to the public in 1990 and it was redeveloped and reopened again to the public in November 2008.
