Clough Oughter Castle

Hotels near Clough Oughter Castle, Cavan, Ireland .

Clough Oughter Castle is located on an island in Lough Oughter, Ireland, and is accessible by boat only.

This circular castle stands on a man-made island and is believed to have been built by the Anglo-Norman William 'Gorm' de Lacy in the early 1200s. The leading Irish clan, the O'Reillys, acquired control of the castle in 1233 and kept the castle as a fortress and prison until the 1500s.

The castle was then designated a royal castle, and was seized by Irish rebels in 1641. It was used as a prison often during battles in the 1600s. Damaged by Cromwellian forces in 1653, the castle was then abandoned.

In 1987, an archaeological dig uncovered four phases of building at the site of Clough Oughter.
