The Cobra Museum in Amsterdam does not house what its name denotes. With no snakes slithering around, the building actually serves as Amsterdam's Museum of Modern Art.

The name Cobra comes from the French names of the cities of Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. The artists who found the CoBrA group came from these three European capitals. In 1948 the artists formed the CoBra movement, the idea of breaking new ground by working spontaneously with art. The emphasis of their pieces was to be on fantastic imagery. By 1951 however, the movement officially ended.

Over 40 artists were members, painting with fantasy and loads of color. Today, visitors interested in the CoBrA movement can view collections of the key works by CoBrA artists. Also housed in the museum, works by Dutch contemporaries are on display from the Vrij Beelden and Creatie art movements.

The Cobra Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11AM to 5PM. Admission costs 9.50 euro per adult. Museum enthusiasts can easily reach the Cobra by taking a city bus to Bus Station Amstelveen, which lies just opposite the Cobra Museum of Modern Art Building.
