It is the only airport that serves the Coffs Harbour area. The airport is served mostly by Qantas, Virgin Blue and Brindabella Airlines.

Airport construction began in the early 1990s as a means of developing the area as a good destination for business. Later, renovations and improvement brought the airport to what it is today. In 1994, the terminal and runway was upgraded and improved. This gave way for the airport to become accessible to all kinds of aircrafts.

The airport is located just outside the Pacific Highway and is easily reached by public transportation. Buses, taxis and airport buses take passengers to tourist destinations in Coffs Harbour such as the Big Banana, the Coffs Harbour Jetty, the Solitary Islands Marine Park, and natural parks like the Bellinger River National Park, Bindarri National Park, Coffs Coast Regional Park and many others.

The airport is also a training area for would-be pilots. The Coffs Harbour Aero Club attracts people from all over the world to train to become good aviators. The airport provides car rentals, a security car park, and cafes that serve the needs of its hungry passengers.
