Majestically perched atop Telegraph Hill in the center of San Francisco, the Coit Tower was originally built as part of a large wave of beautification projects in the 1930s, in this case at the bequest of former resident Lillie Hitchcock Coit who conceded part of her own land for the project. Today, the Coit Tower is one of the most striking examples of art deco architecture in the city, and adjacent to the tower there is a statue of Christopher Columbus in Pioneer Park. The tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

By climbing Coit Tower, visitors can obtain some of the most striking views of the San Francisco Bay and surrounding area, including Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge. Accessing the viewing platform is free of charge and on the climb to the top visitors get to take in a great amount of murals which were painted during the original construction depicting life in the area during the Great Depression, which are currently protected as historical patrimony by the city.
