Cologne Cathedral, a Roman catholic church in Cologne, Germany, is an example of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back to 1248 and built on the site of a former Roman temple, the church, also called Kölner Dom, took until 1880 to complete. One of the world's largest churches and Northern Europe's largest Gothic church, it measures 474 feet long, 284 feet wide, and its two towers stand 515 feet tall. From 1880 to 1884, the Cologne Cathedral was the tallest structure in the world, until the Washington Monument was built.

The interior space of the cathedral is equivalent to that of 600 houses. The cathedral has 12 bells, including the largest free-swinging bell in the world, the bell of St. Peter, weighing 24 tons.

The church was bombed 14 times in World War II but still stands.

The cathedral holds a famous relic, the Sarcophagus of the Magi. Dating from the 13th century, it is thought to be the largest reliquary in the western world, and believed to hold the remains of the three wise men.
