Reminiscent of the United States Capitol Building in Washington, DC, the Colorado State Capitol faces the Rocky Mountains to the west at 200 East Colfax Avenue in Denver. The inscription “One Mile Above Sea Level” on the 15th step of the West Entrance greets visitors to the Capitol, reminding stair-climbers of the official elevation of Denver, 5,280 feet above sea-level.

The building was completed in 1894, with an exterior of Colorado white granite, and an interior that extensively utilized Colorado Rose Onyx marble, to the point that it extinguished the known supply of the rare stone. A focal point for the city of Denver is the gold dome of the Capitol Building, which is actually gold-plated. Also of note is the Gallery of Presidents, which displays the portrait of every U.S. President in history in the hallways of the building.

Tours of the Capitol Building are available Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. until 2:30 P.M., and can be arranged at the north entrance of the building. The Capitol is within walking distance of other Denver attractions such as the Denver Museum of Art, the Colorado Convention Center, and the Lower Downtown (LoDo) entertainment district.
