Columbia Metropolitan Airport (code CAE) is located in Lexington County southwest of downtown Columbia. While the airport was opened originally in 1940, the war effort quickly transformed Lexington County Airport into a military airport. Significant construction was undertaken by the army, making the landing strips able to accommodate nearly any type of plane.

Though it is a hub for UPS cargo flights, the amount of commercial airlines offering service out of CAE is significant. Major airlines like Delta, along with partners Atlantic Southeast and Pinnacle, offer flights to Atlanta, NY-La Guardia and Detroit. United has regular service to Chicago-O’Hare and Washington (Dulles), while Continental offers connecting service to its hub in Houston. US Airways also has service to Philadelphia, Charlotte and Washington-Reagan.

Renovations in 2003 improved parking options, as there are many short and long term options now at CAE. Car rental companies like Hertz and Avis are located in the ground transportation area. Limousine service, taxis and public buses are all available in the airport.

Accommodations nearby are extensive on Airport Boulevard. Country Inn, Sleep Inn, Knights Inn and Airport Inn are all within two miles of the airport.
