Originally located at Bull and Senate St. in the Taylor House, the Columbia Museum of Art opened its doors in 1950 and for the next two decades served as the area’s premier art and natural history museum. Featuring both a planetarium and an art training school, the museum faced financial problems in the 1970s and 1980s and, unable to keep up with the expensive care of the historic building, was forced to move to Main Street and Hampton, its current location.

Opening in 1998 at its new location, the museum has over 20,000 square feet of gallery space, art studios, an auditorium seating 150 people, a library, a museum shop and several reception spaces. The Samuel H. Kress Collection features Baroque and Renaissance works, while 18th and 19th century collections round out the second floor galleries. A significant number of public programs, including art classes and film screenings, make the museum a key cultural force in Columbia.

Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sundays 12-5 and the first Friday of every month 10-8. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students, $8 for senior citizens (65 and over) and $8 for members of the military. Admission on Sunday is free. There are several public parking garages within a short walk of the Museum. Metered parking is available on Main St., Hampton St., Assembly St. and Sumter St.

Accommodations in the area include the Marriott around the corner on Hampton Street and the Sheraton at 1400 Main, one block away. The Hampton Inn on Gervais Street is highly recommended.
