It takes a special kind of shopping center to become an institution in any city, big or small. In Columbus, one of the most popular shopping centers in town was Columbus City Center, known to locals as simply City Center. Located in the middle of downtown, next to The Ohio Theatre and just a short walk from the state capital, The Columbus City Center was a three-level shopping space that covered over a million square feet.

Built by the same company that handled some of the significant shopping centers around the country, including one in Beverly Hills, The Columbus City Center formally opened to the public in 1989. A number of popular shops moved in, and City Center managed to grow over the years, netting Macy's and Marshall's.

But the good times couldn't last forever. In the late 1990s, a number of other shopping centers popped up around town, providing better options for those looking for upscale stores, as well as shopping centers more conveniently located for suburban shoppers. Businesses started leaving, and eventually, the decision was made to shut the doors forever on The Columbus City Center.

Today, the mall's ample parking lot is still frequently used by downtown shoppers and workers who are trying to beat the parking crunch. The city has organized plans for a new project, which will turn the former shopping center into a park, with restaurants and limited shopping options, too. A number of hotels are close to The Columbus City Center, including The Doubletree Guest Suites Columbus, The Courtyard Columbus Downtown, and The Westin Columbus.
