Just five miles north of The Ohio State University Airport, overlooking the O’Shaughnessy Reservoir, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is widely recognized as one of the best zoos in the United States. Opened in 1927, the zoo rose to national prominence under the leadership of Jack Hanna, who was the zoo’s director from 1978 to 1993. Present home to over 5,800 animals, covering almost 750 different species, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium now welcomes over 1.8 million visitors annually.

In addition to the eight regions of the zoo that represent different global habitats, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium also offers visitors the chance to play the 18-hole Safari Golf Course, as well as entertainment at Zoobezi Bay water park and Jungle Jack’s Landing amusement park. Notable exhibits include the Pachyderm Building, the second largest such indoor exhibit in the world, and includes a baby Asian Elephant born in March of 2009, and the African Forest habitat, which boasts three generations of Western Lowland Gorillas. In addition to various education programs, the zoo also operates a fund-raising organization that has collected over $3 million for global conservation efforts.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is located at 4850 West Powell Road in Powell, Ohio, and is open seven days per week, from 9 A.M. until 5 P.M. Admission is $12 for adults and $7 for children, with military and senior discounts available. Parking is available on-site for $5 per vehicle.
