Column of the Independence

Hotels near Column of the Independence, Mexico City, Mexico .

Column of the Independence, or the Angel of Independence (El Angel), is a monument located in a traffic circle along Paseo de la Reforma in downtown Mexico City. Celebrating the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence in 1810, the monument was dedicated on the hundred year anniversary in 1910.

At the base of the angel is a bronze sculpture with four sides, representing Peace, Justice, Law and War. On the side of the monument are bronze sculptures representing heroes of the battles for independence. The Corinthian column is over 75 feet high and contains an interior staircase for visitors to climb and get a dramatic view of the area. The sculpture of the angel at the top of the column is the key point of the monument.

Designed by Antonio Rivas Mercado, the statue was engineered by Roberto Gayol and includes sculptures by Italian Enrique Alciati. Originally built with nine steps leading up to the base, another fourteen have been added to accommodate the sinking ground levels of Mexico City (the city is built on a lake). The angel actually toppled to the ground during a violent earthquake in 1957. It took a full year of work to get the monument back in place. Renovations in 2006 have restored it to its original luster.

Accommodations in the area include the Hotel del Angel (154 Rio Lerma), the Hotel Galeria Plaza (Hamburgo 195), the Hotel Suites San Marine (107 Eje Rio 2 Pte), the Hotel Reforma (373 Paseo de la Reforma), the Holiday Inn Suites (78 Amberes) and the Hotel Casa Inn (237 Roio Lerma).
