The Concertgebouw (concert building in English) is a concert hall located in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Along with places such as Boston’s Symphony Hall and the Musikverein in Vienna, the Concertgebouw is considered one of the finest concert halls in the world. It construction began in 1883 in a pasture that was then outside the city and was finished in 1888.

The main hall is called the ”Grote Zaal “, is 44 meters long, 28 meters high and 17 meters high and has 2037 seats. With a reverberation time of 2.2 seconds with audience and 2.8 seconds with, it is ideal for the late Romantic repertoire such as Mahler. The Who and Pink Floyd performed here in the 1960s, though this characteristic makes it largely unsuited for amplified music. Not just orchestras but jazz and world music performs as well as concert performances of opera take place in the Grote Zaal. Behind the main hall is located the second hall called the”Kleine Hall”, a smaller, oval-shaped venue with 478 seats. This is a more intimate space used for chamber music and lieder. Some nine hundred concerts per year take place in the Concertgebouw with an audience of over 800.000 peoples, which makes it the second most-visited hall in the world. The annual New Year’s Concert is one of the highlights of the Concertgebouw.

Three hours before and four hours after the performance, public transport is free for Concertgebouw tickets owners.
