The Conservancy of Southwest Florida, based in Naples, provides rescue services to local animal species, as well as educational outreach programs to educate the community on environmental protection and land stewardship. The center got its start in 1964, when local activists got together to protest the destruction of their beloved landscape to make way for a new road through Rookery Bay. The proposed addition would threaten plant and animal species which call the place home, and these concerned citizens came together for the greater good, and their group has continued to become an even stronger presence in the southwest Florida area. Among their greatest achievements to date has been the tracking of species for the Western Everglades Restoration Project, caring for thousands of wounded and sick animals every year, looking out for at-risk sea turtle hatchlings, and conserving 55,000 acres of land to protect water flow in the Everglades.
