The Basilica of Constantine, also called Aula Palatina, is located in Trier, Germany, six miles from Luxembourg. This Roman basilica was built by the Emperor Constantine in 310 AD as part of a palace complex. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for having the largest single inner room, measuring 220 feet long, 88 feet wide, and 108 feet tall.
The original Aula Palatina had a forehall, entrance vestibule, and service buildings attached to it. The bishop of Trier used it as a home during medieval times. The palace was redesigned in the 1600s and again in the 1800s. In 1856, the Aula Palatina became a protestant church. Fire bombs burned the building in 1944 during World War II. Reconstruction afterwards did not preserve inner decorations, leaving the brick walls visible from the interior.
