The Museum of Contemporary Art of Parana was established in 1970. A state and public institution with the aim to provide support for artists of Parana, painter Fernando Velloso oversaw the opening of the museum and was its director. Originally planned for 25 de Maio, the museum was moved to its current location – Rua Desembargador Westphalen 16 – in 1974. It is part of the Artistic and Historic Heritage Register.

Beyond paintings and galleries, the museum has a library dedicated to art history and criticism and rooms for video and slide presentations. Artists often come to present their work or give lectures and educational materials are part of the museum’s mission.

Major shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art included the 1972 exhibition of the work of Alberto Massuda. Beralda Altenfelder and Joao Camara both displayed important works here in 1988. The exhibit of the work of Arcangelo Ianelli in 1990 remains one of the key events in the museum’s history.
