Controceni Museum

Hotels near Controceni Museum, Bucharest, Romania .

When visiting Bucharest, Romania, visitors can become royalty by touring the Cotroceni Museum, the palace and residence of the President of Romania.

Constructed by French architect Paul Gottereau in the late 1800s, the Cotroceni Palace was largely designed in keeping with neoclassical style for heir prince Ferdinand and princess Marie. Even before major construction in the 1800s, the site served as a monastery and royal residence to Prince Serban Cantacuzino from 1679 to 1681.

The old wing became a museum after 1990. The Cotroceni Museum showcases two floors of the palace containing countless rooms decorated in varying styles. One of the best-preserved rooms is said to be the library, which is covered in wall-to-wall wood. Tours take visitors through the Oriental Hall, Norwegian Hall and the Queen's Chamber. All areas are almost identical to the original designs.

The Cotroceni Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9AM to 5PM. Visitors must pay an admission charge and call ahead to make an appointment for a tour.
