Corning Tower

Hotels near Corning Tower, Rensselaer (New York), United States .

Not all of New York's skyscrapers are located in New York City. The Corning Tower, or The Mayor Erastus Corning 2nd Tower, if you're being formal, is the tallest skyscraper in the entire state, outside of New York City. Built in the 1970s, it towers over downtown Albany, and current houses a number of office buildings, including that of the State Office, the State Department of Health, and the Office of General Services.

While photographers and architecture aficionados might enjoy a peek at the building from the ground, most visitors head to Corning Tower to see the world from the top--more specifically, the observation deck located on the building's 42nd floor. From there, it's possible to see all the way to the Hudson River, as well as most of Albany and the surrounding area. There's a non-stop elevator straight to the observation deck, and it's free to visit daily, from ten in the morning until four in the afternoon. All visitors must present a valid form of government issued identification before heading up to the observation deck.

Many of the hotels in downtown Albany are just a short walk from the building, including the Crowne Plaza hotel Albany City Center, the Holiday Inn Express Albany, and the Best Western Sovereign Hotel.
