The Cross of the Scriptures is a 13 foot high cross carved from a single piece of sandstone in 900 AD. It is located at Clonmacnoise, a former monastery in County Offaly, Ireland south of the town of Athlone on the River Shannon. It is one of the most famous surviving high crosses in Ireland, especially known for its inscription that requests a prayer for Colman, the maker of the cross, and for Flann, King of Ireland, both of whom built Clonmacnoise cathedral. On the surface of the cross is panels that depict scenes from the Crucifixion, Last Judgment, and Christ in the Tomb. The original Cross of the Scriptures has been moved inside of a visitors center, ans a replica stands outside in its place.

Clonmacnoise was once the most famous monastery in Ireland, due to its strategic location and the fact that it was a center or religion, learning, craftsmanship, and trade in the 9th century. High kings of Tarra and Connacht were interred at Clonmacnoise.

Today, tourists may visit Clonmacnoise for a small admission fee at the Interpretive Centre. Sundays during the summer, a boat from Shannonbridge runs to the Clonmacnoise site.
