The idyllic and peaceful Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana, is home to many notable historic people, including the founder of L.S. Department Stores, Lyman Ayres, U.S. Senator Albert J. Beveridge, Dr. John S. Bobbs, who performed the first gall bladder surgery, and many more. Incorporated in 1863, this non-profit, non-denominational cemetery has seen more than 190,000 burials in its nearly 150-year history. A notable area of the cemetery is the “Confederate Mound,” which is the final burial spot of 1,616 Confederate prisoners of war who died while being held at Camp Morton. Many of these soldiers have been identified thanks to the efforts of two Indianapolis police officers, and now, ten bronze plaques can be seen at the site in their memory. Every year on Memorial Day, reenactments honor these Americans at the Mound. The Crown Hill National Cemetery can be found on 1.4 acres within the Cemetery, on a hill behind the Chapel. The U.S. Government bought the plot in 1866 to rebury 707 fallen Union soldiers.

Public tours of the Cemetery occur twice a month on a Saturday or Sunday. These last approximately 1 hour and thirty minutes, and cost $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for students.
