The Brazilian city of Florianopolis, capital of the state of Santa Catarina, has many samples of colonial architecture and history that have lingered into modern times, giving the city a rich tourist appeal. One of the main attractions in the center of Florianopolis is the Cruz e Souza Palace, which is set in an imposing historical building with ten different allegorical statues crafted by famed Italian artist Gabriel Sielva gracing the top.

The building that today houses the Cruz e Sousa Palace was at one point in time the seat of the government of the state of Catarina. It was the site of fancy, regal balls and dances, and visitors to the site included the former emperors of Portugal and Brazil. It ceased to serve as an official building in 1984 and was converted into a museum by 1986. The building underwent restoration in 1977 and 1984.

Today, in addition to serving as one big museum, the site also houses the Santa Catarina Institute of History and Geography.
