While Jacksonville, Florida and modern and contemporary art might not go hand in and hand to many outsiders, in fact, art is a large part of Jacksonville. There's a popular monthly ArtWalk in downtown, and a number of the colleges have art-related programs. There's also a performing arts high school, Douglas Anderson, with a strong visual arts department.

On ArtWalk, one of the most popular stops is the esteemed Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, situated right on the banks of the St. Johns River, a short walk from the bustle of the up-and-coming artsy neighborhood of Riverside.

Located in the former home of Arthur and Ninah Cummer, a couple with a great appreciation for arts and culture, The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens opened in 1961 and has been a focal point for local exhibitions as well as for culture since then. The gardens are also a popular spot for strolling, for locals of all ages as well as visitors impressed with the peaceful setting and great view of the river.

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens has a collection of almost 6,000 works of art, which run the gamut from different important art movements. Most of the collection is devoted to European and American paintings, and there are frequently special exhibitions with a focus on local artists as well as more contemporary movements.

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is closed on Mondays and open every other day of the week, with extended hours on Tuesdays. Many downtown hotels are just a short drive away, but some of Jacksonville's most picturesque inns are even closer, including The Riverdale Inn and The Row Restaurant.
