Currituck Lighthouse

Standing at a height of 158 feet, the Currituck Lighthouse in Corolla, North Carolina is a beacon of light along the coast. The lighthouse was built in 1875 and the Victorian-style keeper’s house beside it was constructed in 1876. In 1939, the lighthouse was automated under the watch of the U.S. Coast Guard but fell into decay in later decades. Restoration efforts were undertaken in the 1980s, and the lighthouse was reopened to the public in 1991.

Today, thousands of visitors pass through the Currituck Lighthouse each year. Open from Easter through Thanksgiving, the lighthouse is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. During the summer months, the lighthouse is open until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays. Visitors are welcome to climb the 214 steps of the lighthouse at a fee and pass through the Museum Shop on their way out to purchase lighthouse merchandise. Tour groups should contact lighthouse staff three weeks in advance.
