Downtown Dallas has a lot of offerings that might not immediately come to mind when you think of how you'd like to spend your free time in Texas. One of the most interesting, especially if you're looking for some culture, is The Dallas Museum of Art, one of the biggest art-related spaces in the entire downtown Arts District.

Didn't know that Dallas had an Arts District? It's one of the many ways this down-home city has grown up in the past few years. The Dallas Museum of Art has been around for a significant amount of time, though, but moved to its current home in the 1980s, where it intends to stay.

Fans of Egyptian art are in luck if they're visiting Dallas, because The Dallas Museum of Art has over 400 pieces of both Egyptian and Nubian works. The biggest draw, however, is the museums' Wendy and Emery Reves Collection, which can be found in a stunning and large replica of the couple's French villa, where the art was originally shown. A vast array of paintings and sculptures from the masters are included in this collection, and most of the works are modernist, impressionist, or post-impressionist. Some of the big names are Monet, Renoir, Degas, Daumier, Gauguin, and van Gogh.

In addition to the permanent collection, The Dallas Museum of Art has a number of visiting exhibits throughout the year, including ones that feature such diverse subjects as paintings about music, artistic hand-crafted furniture made by Charles Rohlfs, and more contemporary ventures that include installation and performance art.

The Dallas Museum of Art is open every day of the week except for Mondays. ours on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday are from eleven in the morning until five in the afternoon. On Thursdays, the museum stays open late, closing at nine.
