Dam Square was built in 1720 and is situated in the center of the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. This historical tourist area lies 750 meters to the south of the city's main transportation hub, Centraal Station. Starting as a dam for the Amstel River, the square became the center of Amsterdam as the town grew. Although named Dam Square, it is rectangular and connects Damrak and Rokin streets. It is the endpoint for the streets Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat and Damstraat. Dam Square abounds with historical tourist attractions. The Royal Palace, which was the city hall from 1655 to 1808, is located at Dam Square's west end. Also in Dam Square are Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), the National Monument (dedicated to victims of World War II), the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, and the luxury department store De Bijenkorf. Hotels in Dam Square range from $120 per night at the three-star Nh City Centre, housed in a building from the 1920s, to the four-star Jolly Carlton Hotel for about $130 USD per night, with both including breakfast. Most hotels in the area are three- and four-star, with luxurious amenities provided. However, be prepared for older facilities, as many hotels in Dam Square are historical sites themselves and might not be as modernized as more contemporary hotels. These hotels are at a great advantage as they all are convenient to the above-mentioned attractions, some of them being right outside the hotel's front door.
