Amongst the historical attractions in Springfield, Illinois, one of the stand-outs is the Dana-Thomas House. Designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, this “Prairie Style” house is located on East Lawrence Avenue. The house was built for Susan Lawrence Dana in 1902, who inherited a large amount of money after the death of her husband in 1900. When inside the house, interesting architectural features include skylights, door panels, sconces, light fixtures and over 400 art-glass windows designed by Wright himself. Up until old age Dana continued to live in the house, until the 1940s when it was finally sold. After many years of careful restoration and maintenance by custodian Charles C. Thomas, the Dana-Thomas house was sold to the State of Illinois in 1981, and later taken over by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. Today the Dana-Thomas House is open for tours, beginning every 20 minutes from 9am-4pm Wednesday through Sunday. Suggested donations at admission are $5 for Adults, $3 for Children and $13 for families. For more historical area attractions head to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Old State Capitol State Historic Site, Oak Ridge Cemetery, Washington Park Botanical Gardens, the Lincoln Memorial Garden and the Henson Robinson Zoo.
